Export 3MF without assuming printer settings

3MF can package model geometry, units, and supported material information for a manufacturing handoff. It is not automatically a complete slicer project or a ready-to-print toolpath. Pro lists 3MF export. Inspect what the actual file contains and what the receiving slicer preserves before relying on color assignments or other package features.

Choose the right starting point

Choose 3MF when explicit units or compatible package metadata help the handoff. The core specification distinguishes model data from build, project, slice, and toolpath uses. All may appear in a 3MF ecosystem, but they are not interchangeable. A model exporter does not necessarily write a slicer's printer profiles or plate settings.

Work through the handoff

Import the actual exported file into the target slicer and inspect dimensions, object structure, and material assignments. Select the correct printer and material profiles locally unless a trusted project file intentionally includes them. Check geometry before slicing, then save your validated slicer setup separately from the untouched source model.

Limitations and failure cases

Color and advanced material features depend on supported extensions. Metadata may be ignored by tools that do not understand it. A file named .3mf does not prove it contains printer-ready settings, multiple materials, or a manifold surface. No Objectify color-preservation test is claimed in this guide.

Acceptance checklist

Verify a known dimension and each material assignment after import. Review warnings about unsupported extensions. Inspect the sliced layers for missing walls and unsupported islands. Reopen the saved slicer project to confirm its settings persist, and record the slicer version and profiles rather than attributing them to the original model export.
