GLB vs FBX: choose the receiving pipeline
Choose GLB for a glTF-based viewer or pipeline, and FBX when the receiving tool follows an FBX import workflow. Both formats can represent more than a static mesh; actual exported content and importer support decide the handoff. Pro lists static GLB and FBX exports. Objectify's auto-rig and rigged FBX are Studio features.
| Criterion | GLB | FBX |
|---|---|---|
| Common destination | glTF viewers; Godot | Unity; established FBX pipelines |
| Materials | Standard glTF PBR; extensions vary | Importer-specific translation |
| Animation capability | Skins and clips supported by glTF | Skeleton and clip support depends on pipeline |
| Objectify rigging offer | No equivalent rigged output claimed here | Rigged FBX after auto-rig on Studio |
Choose the right starting point
GLB packages glTF data in a binary container and suits many web viewers and Godot's recommended import path. FBX fits Unity's primary model import workflow and many established DCC pipelines. Neither extension is a universal quality upgrade. Start with the receiving project's supported importer and required data.
Work through the handoff
List the data the recipient needs: mesh, materials, skeleton, and clips. Check the importer documentation and export a small representative asset before a batch. Open the file in the real project, not only a converter. Compare geometry, scale, and material assignments against the approved source before selecting the format for the rest.
Limitations and failure cases
GLB supports skinning and animation in the specification, so 'FBX for rigs, GLB for static only' is not a format rule. Material extensions can be unsupported, and FBX shaders may need reconstruction. Objectify's listed rigged FBX output does not establish equivalent rigged GLB output or universal animation compatibility.
Acceptance checklist
Inspect dimensions, axes, normals, textures, and material slots in the receiving tool. If the export includes animation, play the required clips and test joint bends. Check any external dependencies remain available after moving the file. Record the importer version and corrective steps; opening successfully is only the first acceptance check.
