Why does a 3D model import at the wrong scale?

Wrong import scale usually comes from unit interpretation, exporter transforms, or importer scale settings. Compare the model with a known measurement before editing it by eye. glTF defines meters and 3MF carries units; OBJ handoffs need explicit scale checks. A plausible generated shape is not a measured product drawing or a guarantee of dimensional accuracy.

Choose the right starting point

Start with one known dimension and the receiving tool's unit settings. Distinguish incorrect object scale from an intentionally small design. If every dimension differs by the same factor, investigate unit conversion and transforms before changing the geometry. If proportions themselves are wrong, uniform scaling will not repair the shape.

Work through the handoff

Keep the source export unchanged. Measure the imported bounding dimensions and compare with the intended size. Inspect importer scale and any parent transforms. Apply one deliberate correction in the working file or import settings, then reimport or reopen to verify that the correction is not being applied twice.

Limitations and failure cases

Unit support in a format is not proof that the producing application used the desired dimensions. Generated objects need measured adjustment for fit. Nonuniform scaling can distort proportions and affect rig behavior. Avoid generic conversion factors without checking both sides; mixed pipelines may already perform a unit conversion.

Acceptance checklist

Compare a second independent dimension and inspect axes, pivot, and child transforms. Test the final file in the receiving project, not only the editor where you corrected it. For printing, confirm slicer dimensions again. Record intended units, import settings, and the single scale correction so another recipient can reproduce the handoff.
